Obituary

Richard S. Burt, Sr., 76, of New Bedford died Thursday May 18, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the former husband of the late Elva (Morse) Burt.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Clarence and Blanche (Judson) Burt, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner.

Mr. Burt was the former proprietor of Jean's Variety Store on Tarkiln Hill Road.

He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks in Florida. He was the manager of the Golden Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps from 1965-1970. He was active in the National Flag Truck Program, which carries American flags to ceremonies around the world.

Survivors include seven children, Richard S. Burt, Jr. of Johnston, R.I, William H. Burt of Brunswick, Maine, Pamela A. Burt of Rochester, David N. Burt and Patricia F. Kubik, both of New Bedford, Chris D. Burt of Fairhaven, and Rodney W. Burt of Reno, NV; a brother, Howard Burt of Fairhaven; two sisters, Geraldine Taylor of Florida and Beverly Witek of California; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his pride and joy, his loving cat Polar.


He was the father of the late Alan Burt, and the brother of the late Elizabeth Settlemire.


His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday at 12 Noon in the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner. Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford on Monday from 4-8 PM.
