NORTH CONWAY, NH - Jane Louise (Lewis) Hartford, 86, of Hiram, passed away from natural causes on September 10. Jane was born in Maine on July 1, 1936 to the late Richard and Ida Philbrick Ayer Lewis. She spent her childhood for a short time in Littleton, NH and then Parsonsfield. After high school Jane briefly lived in both Philadelphia and New York City working for PanAm Airlines. She married Conrad B Hartford in June 1959 and then had a decades-long career as Purchasing Manager for Vulcan Electric in Porter. Jane was married to Conrad (Connie) for 55 years before his passing in 2014. She was predeceased by her sister Nona Ayer Hansen, and brothers Merrill G. Ayer, and Donald G. Ayer. She is survived by Sonja Randall of Connecticut, Ryan Randall of Hiram, extraordinary family friend Eric Durgin of Hiram, nieces Carol Hansen (David Aspinall), Jayne Hansen (David Hendrick), and Lynda Hansen, and five great-nieces and nephews. Jane greatly enjoyed traveling the country with Connie, sunny summer days at their camp on Long Pond, visiting her family during the Christmas holidays, reading at night before bed, and faithfully completing her crossword puzzles each morning. Above all else, her life was one of love for and devotion to animals of all types. She found great joy volunteering at Harvest Hills Animal Shelter in Fryeburg for many years which resulted in the adoption of several cats and dogs. Jane was an annual financial contributor to Best Friends Animal Society Sanctuary in Utah, the Humane Society of the United States, and likely other animal charities we will never know about.
To that end, in lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, 1389 Bridgton Rd, Fryeburg, ME 04037, www.harvesthills.org. Jane would be pleased to know that even in death, she could still be of help to shelter animals.
