Obituary

Margaret Mary “Greta” West of Brewster was born on October 27, 1925 and grew up in Roxbury, MA. She passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at the age of 96. During her life, Margaret lived in Dedham and taught professionally for 15 years through the Sisters of Saint Joseph and for 26 more in the public sector until her retirement to Cape Cod, at which point she ran a bed-and-breakfast from her cottage home. She enjoyed walking to the beach and other outdoor activities including tending to her lovely garden; there was something blooming in her yard in each season. She also enjoyed painting, reading and receiving visitors, especially children. Margaret continued to teach those around her even after her official retirement. When she wasn’t shingling her roof by herself, she was caring for her cats and making friends with fellow animal lovers. Her daily devotions to God were always her top priority; she ceaselessly prayed for the living and the dead. Though fiercely independent, she also found community on the Cape through her volunteer work which continued until age 95 at the Council on Aging. No one would guess, in concert with her independent streak, that she had a license to carry although she never owned a firearm. Margaret was predeceased by her dear brother, John, and beloved aunt, Kathleen Bradley. She is survived by her many family and friends from Michigan to New York to Boston to Ireland. Prayers for Margaret will commence on Saturday, September 3rd at 9:00 am at Holy Name Church, 1689 Centre St. West Roxbury followed by the funeral mass at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Margaret’s name to a charity of your choice.
