Obituary

Nystrom, Robert Gideon age 91, most recently of Dover, Massachusetts, died peacefully on August 25th, 2022, with family by his side.

Robert was a native and lifelong resident of Glastonbury, Connecticut, where he lived with his wife of 62 years, Jane Hemingway Carrier, who pre-deceased him in January 2020. For the past two years, Robert lived with his son, William, his daughter-in-law Suzanne, and their children Maddie, Lily and Hazel. Robert is also survived by his beloved daughter Sarah R. Nystrom (Doug) of Turbeville, South Carolina and her children Dustin (Lani) and Daniel Aston.

Robert was a proud member of the Glastonbury High School Class of 1949, and helped with reunions through his 70th reunion in 2019. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War at Keeler Air Force Base in Biloxi Mississippi. He received a degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Hartford, and worked at Pratt & Whitney and then Loctite Corporation for much of his career. He holds several manufacturing patents. In 2005, Robert returned to school and in 2009 at age 78 graduated from Central Connecticut State University with a master’s degree in technology education. He went on to become an Adjunct Professor at Tunxis Community College in Farmington where he taught engineering and robotics courses until the age of 86.

Robert lived a life of service. He was twice elected to the Glastonbury Town Council and was Chairman of the Glastonbury Zoning Board of Appeals. He served as President of the Green Cemetery Association and the Orchard Hill Club. Robert was a lifelong member, deacon and liturgist at the First Church of Christ, Congregational.

A Memorial Service will be held for Robert on Wednesday September 7, 2022 at 5:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where he worshipped for the past three years. There will be a private interment at Glastonbury Green Cemetery. Donations in his honor can be made to St. Andrews Church, Wellesley, to support the ministry and work of the Parish.
