Obituary

Stephen J. Doherty, 51, of New Bedford died unexpectedly Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2001, at home. He was the husband of Maureen (Marr) Doherty; they were married 32 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John P. and Isabel J. (Valentine) Doherty, he lived in New Bedford most of his life.

He was a communicant of St. Lawrence Church.

Mr. Doherty taught history at New Bedford High School for the past five years.

He previously was a sales representative for Phillip Morris Co.

He graduated from Holy Family High School, where he was a member of the 1967 championship basketball team.

He received a bachelors degree from UMass Dartmouth and a masters degree from Cambridge College.

He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze service stars.

He was a member of Andrews-Dahill Post 1531, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the board of directors of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

He coached basketball and volleyball at Keith Junior High School.

His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Stephen J. Doherty Jr. of New Bedford; a daughter, Shannon H. Alves and her husband, Kyle, of New Bedford; six brothers, Thomas E. Doherty of Olympia, Wash., John P. Doherty of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, Michael F. Doherty of North Dartmouth, James A. Doherty of Belfast, Maine, Paul Doherty of South Dartmouth and Kevin W. Doherty of Yarmouth, Maine; a sister, Anne D. Kennedy of Waldoboro, Maine; two grandchildren, Jake Alves and Connor Alves; two aunts, Sr. Mary Frances Doherty, R.S.M., of Cumberland, R.I., and Patricia Lemaire of New Bedford; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clifford and Helen Marr of Acushnet; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
