Carmen Marcolina. Zayas was born on April 4, 1936 to Carmelo Ortiz Y Rivera, and Miguela Torres De Ortiz in Orocovis, Puerto Rico. Carmen was proud of her upbringing and often shared stories of picking coffee beans with her dad and helping her mom to take care of the house as the youngest of six. She had a kind heart and a sweet soul who often stressed the importance of faith, family, and love. She was proud to call Puerto Rico her home before moving to New York and settling in Massachusetts.
Carmen shared this amazing life with her husband Gerardo lasting over 60 years, as the matriarch of this family, giving birth to 8 children. She is preceded in death by her husband Gerardo Colon Zayas, her mother and father, and 6 siblings. She leaves to morning her 6 sons, 2 daughters: Pedro G. Zayas (Lynne), Wilfredo Zayas (Illiana), Carmen M. Zayas, Jose A. Zayas, Antonio Zayas (Blanca), Wanda Zayas, Dr. Gerardo Gauthier-Zayas Jr. (Paul), and Orlando Zayas (Laura). She is a grandmother, and great grandmother to over 40 grandchildren, aunt to many nieces, nephews and committed to serving her faith and community. Although she has transitioned into God’s kingdom, we are blessed knowing her presence will forever be in our hearts.
