John F. Sullivan, age 51, of Needham, MA, passed away on June 29, 2022 from cancer. After earning a BA from Williams College and an MD from the UMass Chan Medical School, John spent five years in outpatient neuropsychiatry at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. In 2017 he returned to UMass as an attending psychiatrist on the 8E medical psychiatric unit, taking over as unit medical director in 2020. John was known to be a thoughtful listener who was unflappable and had a wicked sense of humor.
John’s favorite avocations were weightlifting, reading, barbecuing, and traveling the world with his family. He did the New York Times Crossword puzzle every day and was an avid fan of the Boston Bruins. John was happiest when he was surrounded by his family; he lived for simple things like watching Nicholas’ hockey games, working through homework problems with Isabel, smoking cigars with Jack, watching Curb Your Enthusiasm with TC, and walking Luna at night.
John is survived by his wife TC, his three children, Jack, Isabel and Nicholas, his adoptive mother, Maurice Sullivan, his biological mother, Sue Showers, his mother-in-law, Mary Haldi, and countless friends, colleagues, and family members.
A Memorial Service will be observed on Wednesday, July 6, at 10:30 AM at the Congregationalist Church of Needham. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of John may be made to “UMass Chan Medical School Foundation – The John F. Sullivan, MD Memorial Lectureship” in support of the Department of Psychiatry. Funds will be used by the department to create an annual lecture on a neuropsychiatry topic as part of their psychiatry grand rounds.
