Maureen Rose Merritt, 69, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville Florida.
Funeral services will be held 4 PM, Sunday, June 19, 2022, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel in Fitzgerald, with the Rev. Johnny Ashe officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening, from 6 PM until 8 PM, at the funeral home in Fitzgerald.
Mrs. Merritt was born July 6, 1952, in Long Prairie, Minnesota, to the late Gerald & Anna Schmidt Spieker. She was the middle child of 11. Following high school graduation, she went to work at the local hospital the very next day, and she has been working ever since. Along with her husband, Mrs. Merritt owned and operated Merritt’s Supply. She loved God and her family and considered everyone her family. She liked purple and smiley faces!! She enjoyed target shooting and fishing and could out fish Billy. She enjoyed fishing on the Satilla River, which she called God’s Country. “Miss Moe” never met a stranger and was generous to anyone who needed assistance, helping many when her family was not even made aware. She was of the Catholic faith.
She is survived by her husband of 49 years and 6 days, Billy Merritt of Fitzgerald; a son, Gerald Merritt & Dea of Mystic; grandchildren: Stephen Rogers and Courtney Rogers; a great-grandchild on the way; siblings: Romaine & Peggy Spieker of Calhoun, Roger Spieker, Dennis & Patty Spieker, Daniel Spieker, Gerard & Diane Spieker, Michael Spieker, Rosanne Spieker, and Virginia Evans, all of Minnesota; and a brother-in-law, Phillip Mrozek of Minnesota. Many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Geraldine and Darlene.
