Obituary

Virginia Ruth (Ennis) McCarthy
"Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Avid Traveler"

TEWKSBURY Virginia Ruth (Ennis) McCarthy, also known as “Ginny,” passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 16th, 2022, at the age of 97 years, surrounded by family at her home in Tewksbury, MA. She was born and raised in Lowell by Ruth and Jack Ennis, alongside her brothers Ron and Don who all have predeceased her.

Virginia graduated Lowell High School, where she was Captain of the Girl Officers and a member of the National Honor Society. Upon graduation, she worked at the New England Telephone Company for over twelve years. During this time she traveled extensively with her best friend and Maid of Honor, Helen (Bryant) Regan.

Virginia met her late husband and favorite dance partner, George, in 1948, while at the Commodore Ballroom in Lowell. Ginny and George were married for 65 years, raised 5 children in Lowell, and traveled extensively via camping trips with their children to numerous National and State Parks. Retirement found them moving to Tamarac, Florida for 28 years where they continued their travels, visiting all 50 states and over 25 countries, often on cruise ships.

Virginia was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church of Lowell for 30 years, where she was a member of the Sodality and taught Religious Education. Her passion was creating a beautiful and loving home for her family, excelling at cooking, baking, decorating, sewing, knitting, and gardening.  Upon retiring, she took up golfing with her husband and enjoyed the benefits of living in sunny Florida, including many visits with her children and grandchildren.

In 2014, Virginia and George returned to Greater Lowell to be closer to their family.  Ginny enjoyed friendships wherever she was and her thoughtfulness, smile, and sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her.

Virginia is predeceased by her husband, George McCarthy, their son, Gary McCarthy and their daughter-in law Donna (Clark) McCarthy.  She is survived by four of her children, Kevin McCarthy of Dracut, Stephen McCarthy and his wife, Roberta, of North Hampton, NH, Dennis McCarthy and his wife, Angela, of Lowell, and Sheila Karlson and her husband, Bart of Eustis, Florida. Virginia will be greatly missed by her 9 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, who feel blessed to have had such an exemplary model of a faithful life well lived.
