James R. "Jim" Smith Jr., a lifelong resident of Charlestown entered into eternal life on Wednesday, June 15, 2022 at E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was 91 years of age.
Jim was born in Boston on July 19, 1930, a son of the late James R. Smith and Marie (Elwood) Smith. He grew up in Charlestown and was educated throughout the Boston Public School system. Jim enlisted into the United States Army on April 18, 1952 and served his country with courage and honor for 23 years during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam Conflict where he served 2 tours of duty. He was honorably discharged on September 30, 1975 with the rank of Sergeant. Following his discharge from the United States Army, James worked for several years as an Analyst for a computer company. In his spare time, James enjoyed traveling to Europe.
Jim is the beloved son of the late James R. Smith and Marie (Elwood) Smith. He is the devoted brother of Beverly Foley and the late Frederick Smith and Paul F. Smith. He is the dear brother-in-law of Alice Smith and Lois Smith. He is the dear Uncle Jim to his many loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Jim's visiting hour on Wednesday morning, June 22, 2022 from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, 55 Warren St. Charlestown at 11 A.M. His burial at The Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
