Obituary

Roger Philip Roux, 87, a resident of Medway and a prior longtime resident of Bellingham, died on Saturday, June 11, 2022 at his home.

Born on May 17, 1935, Roger was the son of the late Edgar and Rosilda (Couture) Roux. He grew up in Sanford, Maine where he was raised by his mother, with the loving support of extended family members, following the death of his father when Roger was a baby.

Roger enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1953 and proudly served for 23 years. He was a “mustang”, having become a commissioned officer during the Vietnam War. He attained the rank of Captain before his retirement from the Marine Corps in 1976. Roger held a variety of roles over the course of his career in the Marines but the one he identified with the most was tanker. Over the years, he was stationed throughout the U.S., he completed duty tours in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Okinawa, Japan, and for three years he and his family enjoyed living on Oahu, Hawaii where he managed the Officers’ Club at Camp H. M. Smith. He was a member of the Marine Corps Association and Foundation, the Marine Corps Tankers Association, the Military Officers Association of America, the Third Marine Division Association, and the Marine Corps Mustang Association.

Following his retirement from the Marines, Roger had a second successful career as a quality engineer at GTE. His prior military experience made him a valuable contributor within GTE’s Government Systems division. During his years at GTE, he enjoyed the camaraderie of his coworkers and eventually settled in Bellingham where he lived for over 30 years. He retired from GTE in 1997.

Roger was devoted to his golf game and was a former member of Foxborough Country Club. He was also a skilled poker player and enjoyed hosting monthly poker nights with friends at his home.

He is survived by his daughter Christine (Roux) Hargrave and her husband David of Pepperell and his son Peter Roux, his wife Rachel and their son Beckett of Arden, North Carolina. He was predeceased by his former wife, Donna Roux, with whom he remained close friends until her death in 2006.

He is also survived by three nieces; Kathy Stanley and her husband George, Sheryl Roux, all of Maine, and Susan Phelps of Indiana. He was predeceased by his brothers Henry Roux of Maine and Robert Roux of Indiana.

A burial service with military honors will be held at the Southern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale, Maine on July 14, 2022 at 10:00 am.
