Obituary

Romeo W. Dupont, 94, of New Bedford died Friday May 5, 2006 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long courageous battle with illness. He was the husband of Eva (DeMello) Dupont; they were married for 68 years.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late Ernest and Delima (Spoor) Dupont, he lived in New Bedford for all of his life.

Mr. Dupont was formerly employed as a firefighter for the New Bedford Fire Department at Station 6 and Station 2 for 32 years until his retirement. He had also been a chauffeur for Mayor Matthew Glynn many years ago. He had been the chairman of the Firefighters Charity Circus for many years. He was the oldest retired firefighter in the city.

During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the New Bedford Driving Club for several years. He enjoyed hockey, football, baseball, playing bingo, and traveling. Most of all, he cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, William Dupont and his wife Cynthia of Deland, Fla., Ronald Dupont and his wife Barbara of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Joseph Dupont of New Bedford; a daughter, Carol Morrison and her husband Robert of New Bedford; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Leo, Norman, and Irene Dupont.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9 AM in St. Anthony of Padua Church. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford Tuesday from 5-9 PM.
