Richard P. Franklin, 73

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Richard P. Franklin, age 73, of Mansfield, passed away peacefully, in the comfort of his home, surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, May 14, 2022. He was the beloved husband of Mary Lee (Babajtis) Franklin, to whom he was wed for forty-two years.

Born in Boston, MA on April 23, 1949, he was a loving son of the late James and Mary (McCarthy) Franklin.

Richard grew up and was educated in Randolph. He was a graduate of Randolph High School, where he served as a captain on the football team and continued his education, attending UMass Amherst. During the time of the Vietnam War, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged on June 28, 1973 with the rank of Sergeant E-5.

Prior to retiring, Mr. Franklin was employed as a Technical Writer. He worked at various companies, including the Foxboro Co. and Fidelity Investments in Boston. He loved spending time in the presence of his adoring family and also served as a former member on the Mansfield Youth Basketball Association. Richard was also an avid reader, enjoyed taking day trips and when younger, throwing horseshoes.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his devoted daughters: Katherine Rose Franklin of Portland, Oregon, Melissa M. Franklin of Plainville and Anna Lee Franklin of Mansfield. He was the dear brother of James Franklin, Robert Franklin, Barbara Baird, Mary Mallett, Linda Tortora, Patricia Oles, Karen Tempone, Michael Franklin, the late Susan Leach, the late John “Jackie” Franklin, and is also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

His funeral service, accompanied with military honors, will be held on Thursday, May 19th at 2:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Avenue in Bourne. Those attending the services are asked to meet directly at the Cemetery and to please arrive by 1:45 P.M.

Due to the limitation of flowers allowed at the National Cemetery, Richard’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the West Side Benevolent Circle, P.O. Box 506, Mansfield, MA 02048.
