Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Robert L. “Bob” Ahern, 80, of the East Springfield section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, May 12, 2022. He passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by all the memories that he loved and cherished. He was born in Springfield on March 30, 1942, a beloved son of the late Lawrence F. and Madelyn R. (Conroy) Ahern. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from Cathedral High School in 1959 and had lived in Springfield his entire life. He served his country in the United States Army Reserves. He furthered his education and attended Saint Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada. He was employed as a Commercial Property and Casualty Underwriter and had worked at General Accident Insurance and later at Aetna Life and Casualty Insurance. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield and was a member of The Eagle’s Club, the Chicopee Falls Tiger’s Athletic Club and the American Legion Post 420 in Springfield. An avid sports fan, he always intensely rooted for his Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his loving sister and brother in law, Marilyn A. Kenney and her husband, Lawrence, of South Hadley; his cherished nephew and three nieces, Christopher J. Kenney and his wife, Lori, of Essex, CT, Karen A. Conway and her husband, Timothy, of Walpole, Elizabeth M. Fitzpatrick and her husband, Shawn, of Jamaica Plain and Martha E. Godfroy and her husband, David, of Hopkinton; his five cherished grandnephews and grandnieces, Brian, Heather, Madelyn, William and Amelia; and his many dear extended family members and friends. In addition to his beloved parents, he was predeceased by his loving brother, John F. Ahern who was Called Home on November 8, 2000. His Funeral will be held on Thursday, May 19, 2022 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 9 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His Burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, May 19, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to his Mass.
