Obituary

Worcester - Lucy Rose (Ushinski) Cote, 97, died in grace and peace Tuesday evening, May 10, 2022 at her home in Worcester surrounded by the love of her family. She was the devoted wife of 57 years to Edward A. Cote, who predeceased her. She was born August 25, 1924 in Palmer, the sixth of eight children born to John C. and Rose (Janavich) Ushinski. The family moved to Worcester during the depression, where they celebrated life through many years of joyful family gatherings, traditions, and polka parties. After graduating from Commerce High, Lucy trained as a hairdresser, working at the Peacock Hair Salon before offering services in her home. She was an amazing seamstress and loved making matching outfits and Halloween costumes for her beloved daughters.

She loved to cook, often making fabulous desserts. Whatever creative endeavor Lucy pursued she did to perfection. For many years, she worked in the cafeteria at Burncoat Junior High, no doubt lightening the heart of many students with her warm smile and kindness. She was a decades long communicant at St. Peter’s Church. After Eddie’s death she honored his life by continuing to socialize through frequent bingo games, an occasional trip to the casino and any other adventure that came her way! The isolation imposed by Covid was as deadly as the disease itself.

During WWII, four of her brothers served overseas. Eddie, her future husband, was shot down and became a German POW for ten months, suffering the loss of his leg. Through all the many challenges of her life, Lucy was steadfast in her love of family as she kept on smiling, laughing, cooking, and sewing. She believed strongly that you did what you had to do and that was that.

She adored her grandchildren, never missing a game or any other events, always providing a cooler of drinks and treats and her undying support.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward A. Cote; her parents, John and Rose Ushinski; her brothers Stanley, Joseph, James, John, William, Raymond, her big sister Helen Calcagni, as well as a dear friend, Junior Yanis.

Lucy is survived by her two beloved daughters and families: Deborah L. Cote; Kathleen R. Richardson and spouse Joel; her four cherished grandchildren; Alyssa and her husband, Adam and Jessalyn Richardson, John Scanlon 3rd and Joshua Scanlon and his wife, Erin; five great grandchildren; Kaylee, Caden, Summer, Brielle and Malia, two step-great grandsons Devin and Noah, as well as countless nieces, nephews, and friends.

Families and friends are invited to gather for visiting hours Sunday May 15 at Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home at 12 Hammond St., Worcester from 6-8 PM. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday May 16th, at St Peter’s Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery. To honor Mom’s legacy of unconditional love, be kind in your thoughts, words, and actions to all those you meet. And Smile! Smile! Smile!
