Obituary

James Thomas O’Brien, a 20+ year resident of North Conway, New Hampshire and from Charlestown MA, entered peacefully into eternal rest on May 8, 2022, his 69th birthday.

James was born on May 8, 1953, a son of the late Catherine T. (Welsh) O’Brien and Martin J. O’Brien Sr.

James was born and raised in Charlestown, where he was educated at St. Francis de Sales Parochial School and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School. He furthered his education and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Boston State College.

In his younger years James worked for the Head Start Program in Charlestown. James moved on to perform social work at the Charles Street Jail and then the Nashua Street Jail, where he attained the position of Director of Social Services.
James was a founding and loyal member of the 520 Club. He was also a past “Mayor of Charlestown”.

Upon his retirement, James moved to North Conway, New Hampshire, where he quickly settled in to making many new friends especially at his favorite May Kelly’s Irish Cottage.

James was a lover of a good cigar, which was enhanced when accompanied by a good pour of his favorite Irish libation.

James is the beloved son of Catherine and Marty O’Brien. He is the beloved brother of Marty O’Brien Jr. and his wife Lila Mellen, Roy O’Brien and his wife Sherry, Tommy O’Brien, Danny O’Brien and his wife Joan, Catherine O’Brien Clough and her husband Bobby, Pauline O’Brien and her companion Louie Nadeau, AnnMarie Kelly and her husband Kevin, Michelle Rynne and her husband John, and Paul O’Brien. James is also the devoted friend of John Newton and had a friendship which developed into a brotherly bond.

James is also survived by a multitude of nieces and nephew whom he cherished and with whom he enjoyed many good times.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend James's Funeral Mass on Monday, May 16, 2022 at 11 A.M. in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown. (PLEASE GO DIRECTLY TO CHURCH). His burial is private. His visiting hours will be held on Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 3 to 6 P.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown.
