Obituary

Hazel B. (Souza) Pacheco, 97, of New Bedford passed away peacefully on Monday May 2, 2022. She was the wife of the late Carlos Pacheco. She was best known to many as Granny.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of late Joao A. and Augustina (Borges) Souza, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.

Mrs. Pacheco graduated from New Bedford High School in 1942 and recently attended her 75tth class reunion. Upon graduating she began her employment at Morse Cutting Tools and worked her way up and retired as their Purchasing Agent. In her retirement she became the “Salad Lady” at Newport Creamery, until her granddaughters were born. She then started her favorite job of all, being a full time Grandma.

Hazel was happiest when she was spending time and creating memories at Palimo, the family beach in Fairhaven. An avid bowler, she was a member of the Morse Bowling Team. She also, served as a volunteer lunch lady at Holy Family-Holy Name School and was loved by all the students. Later in life, she enjoyed taking her daily walks and spending time with her family. Hazel enjoyed cooking and was famous for her favas, brownies and latria. She was always there if you needed a ride or to get something from the store. She always enjoyed a sale and loved Filene’s basement in Boston.

She is survived by her daughter, Judy Pacheco-Young; and two granddaughters, Jesseca Young and her companion Tim Donnelly, Jr., and Megan Young. She is also survived by Cheri DeMello of Baton Rouge, LA who was like a second daughter to her. She leaves behind her beloved fur grandbabies, Ritz and Daisy Mae, as well as many other relatives, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by her son-in-law, Steven Young, her sisters, Elsie Souza and Delores Maura, and her grand-dog Shammie.

Her Funeral will be held on Friday May 6th at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by her Funeral Mass at St. Lawrence Church at 11 AM. Burial will be in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Thursday May 5th from 4-7 PM. The family respectfully asks to not send flowers, as this was Hazel’s wish.
