James Antranig Ashjian of Quincy, formerly of Cohasset and Dorchester, September 20, 1927 – April 28, 2022. Son of the late James and Agavni (Tashjian) Ashjian. Beloved husband of the late Marion Ashjian (Hazerjian). Loving brother of the late Flora Small, Anne O’Neil and Mary Ouzoonian. Father of Arleen Ashjian and her husband David James of Newton Centre and Gary Ashjian of Cohasset. Grandfather of Olivia Ashjian James and her fiancée Donald Martin. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
James was a WWII veteran, honorably discharged from the Army of the United States April 27, 1947. He recently celebrated his 67th year as a Mason of the Rising Star Lodge of Stoughton. James’ hobby and vocation was sheet metal work. He was one of the founders of Sturdy Lantern Mfg. Company in South Boston and, later, sole proprietor of Landmark Lights in Abington. James is most notable for the design and manufacture of the Boston streetlights and the Bicentennial Paul Revere Lantern.
After retiring at the age of 70, James returned to the workforce and worked for The Gillette Company / P&G in South Boston for many years. His other hobbies included gardening, following the New England Patriots and the Boston Red Sox, and spending time with family and friends. James’ passion for sheet metal never stopped and he continued to create lights and works of art out of copper and brass until the very end.
Funeral service will be held at Holy Trinity Armenian Church, 145 Brattle Street, Cambridge, MA on Tuesday, May 10, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. A visitation period will be held at the church on Tuesday, from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., immediately prior to the funeral service Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Holy Trinity Armenian Church. Cemetery services are private. Veteran U S Army, WW II.
