“Frannie McDonough”

M. Frances (McCaughey) Shannon, 89 of Lowell, MA passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 14, 2022 with her daughter, Karen and granddaughter, Meghan at her side at D'Youville Senior Care. 

Frannie was born on December 8, 1932, the daughter of Francis and Caroline McCaughey. She grew up in St. Peter's Parish, Lowell. She went to St. Peter's Grammar School, then graduated from Keith Hall and St. John's School of Nursing.

She worked for over thirty years as an emergency room nurse. She was promoted to head nurse of St. John's Emergency Room and when she retired, she had attained the position of Coordinator of Emergency Department Services at St. John's Hospital.

Frannie was dedicated to her profession. She loved working and teaching others in the field of emergency room treatment and care. Her involvement with St. John's ran the gamut from painting holiday pictures on the hospital windows and organizing talent shows, including doctors and staff, to running disaster drills to assist with the training of medical response team.

After her retirement she was able to enjoy her home in the Highlands and her grandchildren. She also traveled extensively with her husband, Captain Richard T. Shannon as he sailed the cruise ship, Sea Cloud to many varied ports. 

In the final years of her life Frannie's personality and her humor showed through at D'Youville. She enjoyed and appreciated the staff who were closest to her there and their mutual affection showed through, especially in her last days. 

M. Frances is survived by her daughter, Karen McDonough Coughlin, her husband, Jed Coughlin and her grandchildren, Meghan F. Coughlin, Caroline K. Coughlin and Liam B. Coughlin. Her sisters, Leona McCaughey Oreszak and her husband, Gene Oreszak, and Helene Murphy. She is also survived by her nephews, Martin Murphy and Matthew Murphy and nieces, Maura McDonough and Martha McDonough Fitzpatrick.

Frannie was predeceased by her first husband, the late Edward F. McDonough and her second husband, the late Captain Richard T. Shannon.

On Friday, May 6, 2022 all are welcome to attend her funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. at St Margaret of Scotland Church, 374 Stevens Street, Lowell, MA. Please meet directly at church.

Procession will follow for burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery.
