Obituary

Wayland: Marie A. (Paulsen) Gray, 92, died peacefully at her home in Wayland on April 23, 2022 after a short illness. She was predeceased by her husband, Hollis Leighton Gray, who died on December 2, 2015 and to whom she was married for 59 years. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Thomas Sindre Gray.
Born in Cambridge on February 20, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Phyllis (Burbank) and the late Thorwald Sindre Paulsen. She attended Belmont High School and graduated from the Katharine Gibbs School. Marie met her future husband for the first time in Boston, sharing the same transit bus, and they raised their three boys in Wayland. Growing up playing tennis and skiing, Marie was a proud Gramma and thoroughly enjoyed watching her grandchildren participate in tennis, skiing, horseback riding, and dance. She loved to read, garden and walk, especially at the Natick Mall, where she made many friends. Marie worked managing the company’s financial records with her husband at their start-up company, Datametrics, for 20 years and later at Newton Wellesley Hospital as the manager of several medical offices until she retired in 2000.
She is survived by her two sons and three daughters -in-law, Robert Leighton Gray and his wife Martha Collins Gray of Concord; Jonathan “Jay” Hollis Gray and his wife Louisa Marie of Roswell, Georgia and Gayle McGinnis of Wayland. In addition, she leaves her grandchildren, Leighton and Lily Gray of Concord; Jacquelyn Gray of Milton, Georgia and Lyndsey (Nickolas) Mahncke of Roswell, Georgia; Emily Gray of Wayland; and her great-grandson, Brayden Mahncke of Roswell, Georgia. Marie leaves her brother Fred Paulsen and his wife Anne of Belmont, her sister Lucy Gorry of Cambridge, her brother Jim Paulsen and his wife Susan of California, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her family, she leaves her friend and neighbor, Sally Hammerness.
