JOSEPH J. SMITH, age 66, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Hingham, died on Feb. 27th, 2006 at the Franciscan Care Center in Sylvania, Ohio after a long illness. Mr. Smith was born in Quincy and was raised and educated in Roxbury. He lived in several towns on the South Shore including 25 years in Hingham. He moved to Toledo 6 years ago. During the years he lived in the area Mr. Smith was a truck driver for the Antonelli Iron Works in Quincy. In 1990 his son Roger A. Smith was killed in an auto accident on the Fore River Bridge in Quincy. Consequently, Mr. Smith, by means of vigils at the bridge and bringing attention to some safety issues, was able to rally support for necessary repairs.
He was the father of three sons; Mark H. Smith of California, David J. Smith of Ohio and the late Roger A. Smith. He was the brother of Catherine Camick, William Smith, James Smith, Donna Eaton and the late Wayne Smith. He also leaves 4 grandchildren; Robyn, Pamela, Roger and Jonathan Smith, and one great grandchild, Shawn Smith.
A graveside service will be conducted on Saturday, May 13th at 10 AM at the Fort Hill Cemetery, Fort Hill St., Hingham.
