Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Irene C. (Plante) Asselin, 106, of the Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022. She passed into Eternal Life at CareOne at Redstone in East Longmeadow surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Saint Isidore, Province of Quebec, Canada on July 16, 1915, a beloved daughter of the late Joseph C. and Amanda (Lafleur) Plante. She was raised in East Longmeadow, graduated from Saint Joseph Elementary School and the High School of Commerce, both in Springfield and later lived in Springfield for many years. She was employed as a Bookkeeper at the former Anger’s Lumber in Springfield and later at her father's business, J.C. Plante & Sons Plumbing in East Longmeadow. She was a communicant of the former Saint Joseph Church in Springfield where she also was a member of the Ladies of Saint Ann and served as a Eucharistic Minister and Bingo Volunteer. Following the closing of her beloved church, she became a communicant of Saint Paul the Apostle Church in Springfield. Above all, she was a loving woman who adored her family and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and soul mate, Emile J. Asselin who was Called Home on December 5, 2000. They were married on June 10, 1939 at Saint Joseph Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 61 years of happiness together. She leaves her four loving children, Richard E. Asselin and Elaine M. Asselin, both of Springfield, Ronald J. Asselin and his wife, Jacqueline, of San Jose, CA and Raymond H. Asselin of Wilbraham; her four cherished grandchildren; her seven cherished great grandchildren; her four cherished great great grandchildren; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her dear brothers and sisters, Hector, Leopold, Albert, Ernest and Louis Plante, Olivine Fortin, Evelyn Morin, Yvonne Girard and Estelle Plante. Her family will receive friends on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the St. Pierre - Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. Her Relatives and Friends will meet directly on Saturday morning, April 23, 2022 for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Saint Paul the Apostle Church, 235 Dwight Road, Springfield, MA 01108. Her Burial will be private for her family at Saint Michael Cemetery, Springfield. Her family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Paul the Apostle Church, 235 Dwight Road, Springfield, MA 01108.
