Obituary

Helen D. (Donovan) Scholl, age 94, of Winchester, formerly of Somerset, passed away on April 12, 2022. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Scholl.

Born, raised and educated in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius and Mary Ellen (Grandfield) Donovan.

Helen attended Villanova University, and also received her Master’s Degree from St. John’s University. She taught high school English and History for many years in Melrose until her retirement.

In her spare time, Helen, who was known for her kind personality and friendly smile, loved playing Cribbage, reading and going to the Cape. She also enjoyed socializing and having lunch with her friends, some of whom were lifelong elementary school classmates.

Helen was the loving and caring stepmother of Diane Savage of Tewksbury, Barbara Ann Johnson and her husband James, of Winchester, Frederick G. Scholl of Woburn and the late Robert W. Scholl, Jr. and Elayne D’Errico. She was the devoted grandmother of Michael MacKenzie, Amy Salvi, Timothy MacKenzie, Michelle MacKenzie, Elizabeth Alves, Robert O’Keefe, Patrick Scholl, James and Robert Johnson, Jennifer Penquite, Julie Lewis, Jessica Smith, Jason Scholl and Thomas D’Errico, and the great-grandmother of Christopher MacKenzie, Kaleigh Salvi, Taylor “TJ” Conley, Victoria, Savannah, James V, Jason and Vanessa D’Errico, Lucas and Libby Smith, Colby Alves, Connor Smallwood and William James Penquite. She was also the dear aunt of James, Robert, Thomas and William Walmsley; the great-aunt of Christopher and Robert Walmsley, Beth Brodeur and Kaitlin Boger; the great-great aunt of Julia Brodeur, Benjamin Walmsley and Ephraim, Hazel, Anders and Sabine Boger.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 21 at 12 noon at St. Mary’s Church, 155 Washington St., Winchester. Visiting Hours will be held at the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester from 10:30-11:30AM prior to the mass. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Winchester.
