William J. "Bill" Cotter, a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 85 years of age.
Bill was born in Boston on June 16, 1936, a son of the late James Cotter and Elizabeth (Meehan) Cotter. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Charlestown High School. He enlisted into the United States Army on January 19, 1955 and served his country with honor and courage during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on January 18, 1957 with the rank of Specialist Third Class. Bill worked as a Telephone Repairman for Western Electric and retired following 30 years of dedicated employment. He was a member of Boston D.A.V. Post # 3. Bill was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching the Boston Bruins. Bill was always the quiet and unassuming man who cared for his wife and always enjoyed watching his children play hockey and basketball while they were growing up.
Bill is the beloved husband of the late Marjorie J. "Margie" (Cutlip) Cotter. He is the devoted father of Jeannie Cotter, James Cotter, the late William J. "Billy" Cotter Jr. and his surviving wife Jen Fay and the late Patrick Cotter. He is the loving Papa to Taylor Cotter. He is the beloved brother of Joan Donovan and her late husband Thomas and the late Betty Locke. He is the dear friend of Moe Gillen and his family. He is also survived by his several loving nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Bill's visiting hours on Saturday morning, April 9, 2022 from 8:30 to 10:30 A.M. in The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 11 A.M. His burial is private.
