Obituary

Rev. Louis W. Pitt, Jr., an Episcopal priest died March 24, 2022, at the age of 98. He was born in Newark, NJ, son of the Rev. and Mrs. Louis W. Pitt. He was raised in suburban Philadelphia where he attended the Episcopal Academy, Class of 1940. He went briefly to Williams College, then to Columbia College graduating in 1944. Drawn to the Episcopal priesthood, he studied at the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, MA and was ordained priest in 1947.

Louis served as assistant in Grace Church, Manchester, NH and as rector of St. Mark’s Church, Foxboro, MA. In 1954 he began a ministry of eighteen years at All Saints Church in Brookline, MA. In addition to parish work there, he had special interest in the Episcopal City Mission, refugee resettlement, the civil rights movement, and church music, establishing a Diocesan Music Commission. He sang in the Chorus Pro Musica. Louis left All Saints in 1972 to serve the Anglican Church in Central Africa. He was Dean of the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, Lusaka, Zambia until 1977, assisting in the reconciliation of races and tribes in that newly independent nation. Returning to the US in 1977, he was interim rector of Trinity Church, Bridgewater, MA until 1980 when he was appointed Canon Pastor of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston. In 1983 he was called back to Africa to the Anglican Cathedral in Harare, Zimbabwe. Returning to the US in retirement in 1987, he served interim ministries at Christ Church, Hamilton and St. John’s Church, Gloucester. In 2000 he moved to Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford, MA.

Louis is survived by a nephew and three nieces: Christopher Pitt of Dorchester, MA, Polly Whiteside of Wellesley Hills, MA, Barbara Lougée of Los Gatos, CA and Nancy Sands of Foxboro, MA. There are six great-nephews and nieces, and two great-great nieces.

The funeral will be held at Parish of the Epiphany, 70 Church Street, Winchester, MA on Saturday, April 2 at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in a family plot in Middle Haddam, CT. Memorial contributions may be sent to Episcopal Relief and Development, 815 Second Avenue, New York, NY 10017.
