Obituary

STANDISH - Elaine Joy Brown passed away on January 19, 2022, at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME after a long and courageous battle with lung cancer.

She was born in Westbrook, ME on February 11, 1943, the daughter of the late Mary Chase Straw Elwell and George Oakley Straw. She was a 1961 graduate of Samuel D. Hanson High School where she was an outstanding athlete. This past summer she and her husband, Richard celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Together they were great dancers and won many dance contests.

Elaine was a school cafeteria manager at Bonny Eagle High School following many years at BEMS. She coached Standish Little League softball for several years. An extremely hard worker and alongside Richard, cut, split and delivered many cords of wood to others and for themselves.

She enjoyed snowmobiling, ice skating, canoeing, fishing, going to the races, listening to country and oldies music, knitting, crocheting, and baking. She also loved to attend her daughter’s and grandchildren’s various sporting events and would travel with Richard wherever they were playing to watch. She loved animals and had many cats over the years.

Elaine is survived by her beloved husband Richard of sixty years; her siblings Joan Wadas and husband John of Gorham, ME, Patricia and Robert Gallagher of Dade City, FL, Lee Straw of New Castle, ME, her sister-in-law Norma Wallace of Wilmington, MA, her four daughters Lynn Brown and her husband, William Sanborn of Standish, Tracey Dostie and husband, Harvey of Standish, Rebecca McHugh and husband, Jonathan from South Portland, and Bonny Brown-Denico and husband, Donald Denico of Standish. She also leaves behind ten grandchildren: Morgan Sanborn, Lincoln Sanborn, Brett Dostie, Amber Carrier, Peyton Collins, Brian McHugh, Michael McHugh, Noah McHugh, Sadie Denico and Aubrey Denico. Elaine also leaves her six great grandchildren: Kennedy, Emile, Vivian, Hudson, Eli and Aurea.. She also leaves her loving cats, Sophie and Milo.

A funeral service will be held in June at the Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel, 498 Long Plains Road, Buxton, ME. Elaine’s family would like to thank the staff from Home Instead, Northern Light Hospice, and Gosnell House as well as their many dear friends who were of great support during this time.
