Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Athan "Soco" Catjakis, 90, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, January 20, 2022. He passed into Eternal Life at Safe Harbor Assisted Living in Agawam surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on May 22, 1931, a beloved son of the late Christos and Evangelia (Dabakis) Catjakis. He was raised in Springfield, graduated from Springfield Technical High School and had lived in Springfield his entire life. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War and attained the rank of Corporal. He had served as the Chief of Staff to Springfield Mayor William C. Sullivan and was later appointed to a seat on the Springfield Housing Authority. He later went on to serve as an aide for 9th Hampden District State Representative Arthur J. McKenna. Following McKenna's retirement, he was elected State Representative and served in the Legislature for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. He served Wards 1 and 2 and represented the North End, the Brightwood, the Hungry Hill and parts of the East Springfield sections of Springfield for four terms. He was admired by his fellow colleagues and his constituents as a loyal friend and fierce advocate. He was a member of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Springfield where he also served as a member and Past President of the Parish Council. He enjoyed coaching the Saint George Olympians Baseball and Basketball teams and the Sacred Heart Basketball team. He also was a member of the Marconi Club, the American Legion Post 430, the Boys Club and the Civitan Club, all in Springfield. Above all, he loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Helen K. (Liakopoulos) Catjakis. They were married on December 4, 1955 in Bath, Maine and were blessed with over 66 years of happiness together. He also leaves his two loving sons, Christopher C. Catjakis and his wife, Sue Ann, of Feeding Hills and Charles P. Catjakis and his wife, Gail, of Agawam; his six cherished grandchildren, Alyssa Chapdelaine and her husband, Brian, Nicholas Catjakis and his wife, Renee, Matthew Catjakis, Courtney O'Brien and her husband, Bill, Mackenzie Doyle and her fiancée, Zahra Swetz, and Taryn Toto and her husband, Joe; his five cherished great grandchildren, Noah, Harper, Isla, Lukas and Georgia; his dear sister, Evelyn Pavloglou; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, numerous friends and extended family members. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his cherished grandson, Louis A. Catjakis who was Called Home on October 25, 2021; and his three dear brothers in law, Vasileos Pavloglou, George Liakopoulos and his wife, Dorothy and Peter Liakopoulos; and his dear sister in law, Barbara Belanger and her husband, Donald. His family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107. He will Lie in Repose on Thursday, January 27, 2022 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. which will be followed by a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. at Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 2320 Main Street, Springfield, MA 01107, (please meet directly at the Cathedral). His Committal Service with United States Army Military Honors will follow the Funeral Service at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
