Obituary

Nancy L. Corcoran, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, died suddenly on January 17, 2022, at the age of 73.

Nancy was born to Michael and Olive (Sandy) Corcoran on July 15, 1948. Her early years were spent in Braintree, MA, then in 1959 the family moved to Scituate, MA, where they lived for many years. After graduating from Scituate High School in 1966, Nancy attended the Chandler School for Women in Boston, and later completed a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration at Northeastern University. Nancy resided for most of her adult life in Weymouth, MA, where she had many friends and was a respected member of her community.

Nancy enjoyed a long and successful career at State Street Bank and Trust Company in Boston, MA. The first position she held, starting in 1977, was Executive Secretary, but she didn’t stop there. During a time when there were relatively few women in leadership roles in the finance field, Nancy’s inherent intelligence, drive, charm, and passion for excellence led to her working her way up the corporate ladder where she culminated her career at State Street serving in Vice President roles from 1992 - 2003, paving the way for many women after her. Nancy went on to serve as Vice President and Banking Office Manager at Boston Private Bank and Trust in Hingham, and later was employed as Assistant Vice President and Banking Office Manager at the First National Bank of Ipswich in Boston until she retired in 2012. Nancy was also passionate about service to her community and held positions on the Board at the Ellis Memorial and Eldridge House in Boston for several years.

Nancy was an optimist who enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved fine dining and wines as much as she loved having a bowl of Brigham’s ice cream at her kitchen table. She took great pleasure in the performing arts, attending many ballets, plays, and musicals in Boston’s theater scene, and she relished spending afternoons at the Museum of Fine Arts, where she was a member. Nancy was an avid reader and movie goer, and especially liked seeing films at the Loring Theater in Hingham with her sister, Jane, her “movie buddy.” She also loved traveling, and over the years visited many places in the U.S. and Europe. In warm weather months, you could often find her at one of the South Shore's beaches, sitting poolside where she lived, golfing, or dining al fresco. Her greatest joy, however, was sharing those experiences and making memories with her family and many dear friends. She especially cherished time spent with her great-nephews and nieces in her later years.

Nancy could light up a room with her smile and laugh. She would always remember your name (she maintained a handwritten address book and a rolodex long after they were replaced with smartphones!), and she always made sure everyone felt included. Nancy was deeply loyal to those she cared about and was known for being steadfast and trustworthy. She was a much admired and respected colleague, friend, and mentor to many people she met on her professional journey, often maintaining those connections long after the job was done.

Nancy is survived by her sister Jane Sorensen (Corcoran) of Duxbury, brother Michael Corcoran III and his wife Karen Corcoran (Duff) of Wareham, her niece Amy Sorensen-Alawad and her husband Magid Alawad of Quincy, her nephew Bill Sorensen of Merrimack, NH, her nephew Michael Corcoran and his partner Pamela Garnett of New Bedford, nephew Matthew Corcoran of New Bedford, her great-nephews Mohammed and Adam Alawad, great-nieces Olivia, Isabelle, and Evelyn Sorensen, and their mother Jacqueline Bosse, great-niece Stella Cuddy, John MacNeil of Weymouth, and a large extended family of cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Michael Corcoran, Jr., and Sandy Corcoran.

A private funeral service will be held. A celebration of Nancy’s life will be planned for all family and friends to attend and will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Together Rising.
