Obituary





Webster – Judith M. (Girouard) Nelson, 80, of Webster and formerly of Worcester, passed away in Harrington Memorial Hospital, Southbridge on Saturday, January 8, 2022 after a long battle with cancer.

Mrs. Nelson was married for 56 years to the late Robert B. Nelson who died in 2020. She is survived a daughter, Karen Griffin and her husband, T. Roger of Charlton; three sons, Erik Nelson and his wife, Kristen of Spanaway, WA, Steven Nelson and his wife, Laurie and Michael Nelson and his wife, Amy of Dudley; 8 grandchildren; a brother, Peter Girouard of Dunstable, MA and his wife Jayne; a sister, Jeanne Kender of Webster and her husband Donald, a brother-in-law, David Rafuse of Boylston, MA and many nephews and nieces.

Judy was born in Worcester, daughter of the late J. Hector and Lillian N. (Lamothe) Girouard and is also predeceased by a sister, Nancy Rafuse.

Mrs. Nelson graduated from Grafton High School and then attended Anna Maria College where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 2004. She was very proud to walk the stage and accept her degree along with her son Michael, who also received his degree from Anna Maria that year.

Judy worked for many years at the former State Mutual Insurance Company in Worcester and also at Anna Maria College in Paxton. After receiving her degree, she worked for the Worcester Public School system. She also worked for several years part time at Specialized Machinery Transport, Inc. in Webster.

She loved to spend time with her family. She was a wonderful and loving mother, Mémé, sister, Aunt, cousin and friend. She could often be found working on a knitting project. She loved making blankets for her friends and family. She was also an avid reader and loved watching movies.

A funeral will be held on Tuesday, January 18 from the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home 12 Hammond St. Worcester with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 AM in Saint Peter’s Church 929 Main St. Worcester. Entombment will follow in Notre Dame Mausoleum, Worcester. Calling hours will be held in the funeral home on Monday, January 17 from 6 to 8 PM. Memorial contributions in memory of Judy may be made to the Worcester Animal Rescue League 139 Holden St. Worcester, MA 01606.
