Mary Ellen Scelzo, age 109, of Tewksbury formerly of Wilmington and Woburn, passed away at the Tewksbury Hospital, Sunday, April 16th following a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael Scelzo with whom she shared fifty-eight years of marriage prior his passing in 1975. Born in Woburn she was the daughter of the late Gaetano and Josephine (Lepore) Brogna.
Together with her husband, Mr. and Mrs. Scelzo lived in Wilmington for many years. In 1933 they opened the popular Rainbow Restaurant and Night Club and ran the business until 1948 when a heavy winter storm colapsed the building.
Mrs. Scelzo lived independently in her Wilmington home until she was 97 and enjoyed caring for her flower garden and doing yard work. Over the years she was very active at the St. Dorothy Parish in Wilmington and was a founding member of St. Dorothy Ladies of Sodality.
Mrs. Scelzo was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and would vividly recall the celebration after the 1918 World Championship when she was a young lady at the age of 21.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by her son Joseph Scelzo, great granddaughter Linda Peters and seven brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughters Mary Ellen McIntire of Tewksbury and Louise Garland of CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Marie Chandler, Michael Scelzo, Mary O´Neil, Michael McIntire, Louise Southmayd and Edna Peters. She is further survived by her great grandchildren, Robert Surran Jr., Brian and Amy Surran, Michael O´Neil, Deborah Burtt, Richard McIntire, David Peters Jr. and great great grandchildren; Owen O´Neil, Anthony and Laci Burtt. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Funeral from the McLaughlin - Dello Russo Funeral Home 60 Pleasant St. Woburn, Friday, at 9 AM. Followed by a funeral mass celebrated by Mary Ellen´s grandnephew, Rev. Richard F. Clancy, at St. Anthony Church, 851 Main St., Woburn, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Thursday 4 thru 8. Services will conclude with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. It has been requested that in lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Mary Ellen´s memory to the Tewksbury Hospital Patient Fund, 365 East St. Tewksbury, MA 01876.
