Obituary

LYMAN- Douglas Joshua Spencer of Lyman Maine, passed away on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough Maine.

He was born on December 13, 1934, in Attleboro, Massachusetts to William J Spencer and Lily Ruth Benn Spencer and was one of three sons.

He graduated from North Attleboro High School in 1953 and during his Senior year, he joined the Naval Reserve on 12/19/1952. He was stationed on the USS Chambers DER 391 in the North Atlantic. He was separated from Active Duty in January of 1957 and Discharged on December 26,1960. After the Navy, he was employed by Aetna Financial Company from 1958 and worked in the Financial and Banking Industry for over 30 years, retiring in 1996.

Doug served in many committees and organizations over the years. In the 1970's, he served on the Town of Lyman Board of Selectman, President of the York County Extension Service, President of the Maine Morgan Horse Association, on the Board of Directors of New England Morgan Horse, Stewart of the Maine Horse Association and was Captain of the Goodwins Mills Fire Department driving truck #53.

Doug and Joy owned Joydale Morgan Horse Farm for over 50 years, 16 of which was in Goodwins Mills and the rest at the current location. He met Joy in July of 1961, when boarding horses on a mutual farm, her horse got loose and decided to meet his horse. They married the following year on May 26, 1962.

He is predeceased by his parents and younger brother Philip Benn Spencer of North Attleboro, Massachusetts. He is survived by his older brother Alan William Spencer of Seattle Washington, wife of 59 years: Joy Andrea Ruth Aspinwall Spencer, daughter Tracey Spencer Bourassa, son Scott Douglas Spencer and two grandsons: Spencer Andrew Bourassa and Connor Joshua Bourassa.

A graveside service with US NAVY Honors will be held on Saturday Dec. 4 at 2 PM at the Goodwins Mills Village Cemetery in Lyman with a reception to follow.

In lieu of flowers those wishing to make a donation in his memory may do so to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital of Portland Maine.
