Johnny Chaney, 77, of Ty Ty, died Sunday, April 16, 2006, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. A U.S. Army Chaplain will officiate with burial to follow in Oakridge Cemetery with full military honors. Members of the military will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 18, 2006 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson.
Mr. Chaney was born on May 1, 1928 in Coffee County and was the son of Henry D. Chaney and Rebecca Minix Chaney, both deceased. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Ford and David Chaney.
Mr. Chaney was a retired Master Sergeant, E8, from the U.S. Army. He served in the Korean Conflict and two tours in Vietnam; served in Baumholder, Germany; was stationed at Fort Stewart and Fort Leonardwood, Missouri; and retired while in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Josephine Swails Chaney of Tifton; a son and daughter-in-law, John Allen and Jackie Chaney of San Diego, California; two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty and Tommy Griffin of Tifton and Elizabeth Ann Chaney of Thornville, Ohio; two sisters, Louise Howard of Douglas and Hazel Young of Douglas; six grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
