Obituary

Domingos Cabral Correia, age 85, lovingly known as Totinho or Dimas, died on November 3, 2021 at Dartmouth General Hospital, in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada.

Domingos was born on March 16, 1936 in São Lourenço dos Órgãos, in the municipality of Santa Cruz. The first born of the five children of João Correia Monteiro and Luísa da Veiga Cabral, he was the brother of Albertina Cabral Correia (Titina), and the late Alexandra (Jóia), Benvindo, and Olívio Correia Monteiro.

As a young man, Domingos went to live in the city of Praia after the death of his father in order to provide a better life for his mother and his siblings. Later, he met the love of his life, Bebiana Semedo Costa Correia, whom he married on March 4, 1972.

In addition to his wife Bibiana, Domingos is survived by his six children: Isaura Correia Rosa (Isa) and her husband Francisco, Elsa Correia (Chinha), Father Irineu Correia, Edna Correia (Duska), Natalina Correia Ferreira (Lina) and her husband Hermenegildo, and Nireida Correia Nsonwu (Neia) and her husband Aloysius. He was predeceased by their adopted daughter Maria Piedade Delgado (Bibia). Domingos is also survived by 16 grandchildren (8 from their adopted daughter) and 8 great-grandchildren (all from their adopted daughter).

Domingos was an accomplished tailor, whose skills were recognized by many and whose clients included government officials in the City of Praia.

Besides his devotion to his family and his professional life, Domingos was an active parishioner of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça. He was a member of the choir, an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, a Lector, an Acolyte and a catechist.

Domingos was a member as well as one of the leaders of Catholic Action, and was alsoinvolved in several other pastoral activities of the Church of Nossa Senhora da Graça.In 1990, when Pope John Paul II visited Cape Verde, Domingos had the privilege of being near the Holy Father and receiving a blessing from him. During the Mass, he brought the chalice to the Holy Father, and later during the distribution of Communion, received Holy Communion from the hands of the Pope.

Upon his retirement in 2007, Totinho and Bibiana moved to the United States and settled in Boston. Domingos continued to be active in the church, serving at St. Patrick's Church as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist, a Lector, and a legionary. A man of great faith, Domingos’ daily practices included the reading of Sacred Scripture and praying the rosary. He was a calm and gentle man, a conversationalist, and someone who observed everything around him in his gentle and cheerful way.

Domingos loved dancing and physical exercise. He loved contemplating nature, especially taking walks by the sea. A simple man, Domingos formed strong relationships with people regardless of the degree of their friendship, and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Em 3 de Novembro último, aos 85 anos faleceu Domingos Cabral Correia, no hospital Dartmouth General Hospital, província de Nova Scotia, Canadá.

Domingos Cabral Correia nasceu a 16/ 03/1936 em São Lourenço dos Órgãos, Concelho de Santa Cruz.

Primogénito dos cinco filhos de João Correia Monteiro e de Luísa da Veiga Cabral, onde deixou a irmã Albertina Cabral Correia (Titina), e já falecidos os irmãos Alexandra (Joia), Benvindo e Olívio Correia Monteiro.

Jovem, foi viver na Praia para providenciar melhores condições de vida aos familiares, mãe e irmãos por ter perdido o pai. Mais tarde, conheceu o amor da sua vida, Bebiana Semedo Costa Correia com quem se casou no dia 04/03/1972.

Deixou seis filhos: Isaura Correia Rosa (Isa) e o esposo Francisco, Elsa Correia (Chinha), Padre Irineu Correia, Edna Correia (Duska), Natalina Correia Ferreira (Lina) eo esposo Hermenegildo, Nireida Correia Nsonwu (Neia) e o esposo Aloysius, e uma filha adoptiva, Maria Piedade Delgado (Bibia), já falecida.

Foi um grande alfaiate, sobretudo, de altas entidades da cidade da Praia.Paralelamente à sua vida familiar e profissional, foi um membro ativo na Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Graça participando ativamente no grupo de canto coral, foi Ministro de Comunhão, catequista, leitor, acólito, legionário, e desempenhou algumas chefias do grupo da Ação Católica, de entre várias outras atividades pastorais da Igreja Nossa Senhora da Graça.

Reformado em 2007, seguiu para os Estados Unidos com a esposa onde fixaram residência em Boston. Nos Estados Unidos, continuou ativo na Igreja de São Patrício, como ministro de comunhão, legionário e leitor.

Como um grande homem de fé, diariamente praticava a leitura da Bíblia e a oração do terço. Um homem "calado" e conversador na observação de tudo que o rodeava com o seu jeito gentil e alegre. Um homem simples, mas profundo no relacionamento com as pessoas independentemente do grau de amizade onde deixou marcas de saudades.Adorava dançar, fazer exercícios físicos e contemplar a natureza quando fazia a sua caminhada à beira do mar.
