Obituary

Charles Anthony "Tony" Spradley, Sr., 72, of Augusta, formerly of Tifton, passed away Friday, October 22, 2021, at his residence. His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 26, 2021, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals with the Rev. Joseph L. Crumley officiating. Tony will be laid to rest at Oak Ridge Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 26, 2021, in the Chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of the service.

Jason Cross, Chance Smith, Jack Saunders, Tim Steedley and Tim Purvis will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be all funeral directors in attendance, including his co-workers from Platt’s Funeral Home in Augusta.

Born August 18, 1949, in Tifton, Tony was the son of the late James Cecil Spradley, Jr. and Lois Evelyn Luke Swaim. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, the Rev. James Cecil Spradley, Sr. and Ellen Willis Spradley; his maternal grandparents, Homer Luke and Mary Brannen Luke; his step-mother, Mary Stembridge Wilson Spradley; and a step-brother, Van Wilson.

Tony graduated from Tift County High School and from Gupton-Jones School of Mortuary Science and worked at several funeral homes throughout his funeral service career in Georgia and Texas, including Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals, Tiftarea Funeral Home and presently at Platt's Funeral Home in Augusta.

Tony was a mentor to up and coming funeral directors and, to quote his co-workers, “Tony was a kind and special person, who had a vast knowledge of the funeral business, loved his job and was a devoted and excellent funeral director.” He loved the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Tony is survived by one son, Charles Anthony Spradley, Jr. of Mississippi; one daughter, Carla Moore of Florida; two sisters, Brenda Spradley Shaw-Saunders of Tifton and Michelle Head Edwards of Rincon; two brothers, Tim Spradley of Macon and Robbie Head of Columbus; a step-brother, Jerry Wilson of Nashville; his only living uncle, the Rev. Nathan C. Spradley, Sr. of Tifton ; his niece, Nicole Shaw of Tifton; his nephew, Jason Shaw of McClenny, Florida; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.
