Stephen J. Curylo, age 65, passed away on October 3, 2021 at Baystate Medical Center. He was born on November 14, 1955 in Springfield, only son of the late Joseph H. and Dorothy (Rzeznikiewicz) Curylo. Stephen was raised in the Polish National Catholic Church and was a later a regular attender at New Life Church (Assembly of God) in Enfield CT. He was a graduate of Chicopee High School, Class of 1973 and earned a Bachelor of Music from Hartt College of Music in 1978. He also completed a course at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting which led to his being FCC licensed in 1985. Stephen's passions in life were singing and radio work. He spent 12 years with radio station WFCR (now NEPM.org) as an on-air part-time classical music host. He made his performance debut as a baritone singer in 1971 and spent the next 50 years concertizing and performing, culminating in his 50th anniversary recital in July 2021. Stephen sang with many organizations, such as the Arcadia Players and Commonwealth Opera based in Northampton, MA, the New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players in New York City for two years, the CT Gilbert and Sullivan Society (where he sang the title role of Thespis in a new realization of the first G & S work), Simsbury Light Opera in CT, other performances at the Northampton Academy of Music (most notably as the elder Germont in a run of La Traviata), and several local musical theater groups where he enjoyed various lead roles such as Emile De Becque is South Pacific and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. He also sang at various local churches in the choir and as a soloist. He is survived by his loving wife Deborah, daughter Elaine and son Paul, all of Chicopee; and two beloved grandchildren, Damian of Chicopee and Tallie of Wethersfield, CT. He was predeceased by a five-year-old grandson Henry. Calling hours will be held on the day of the Memorial, Saturday, October 30, 2021 from 12:00 - 2:00 PM at the Grise Funeral Home, 280 Springfield Street, Chicopee, followed by an in-house prayer service at 1:30 PM. Burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
