Obituary

Marilyn Douglass, 95, of Groton Long Point died Sunday, October 10, 2021 at her home. She was born Marilyn Ruth Smith in San Francisco, CA on February 12, 1926, the daughter of Harland and Ruth Smith.

She was raised in Anoka, MN and graduated from Anoka High School in 1944. She attended Gustavus Adolphus College, in St. Peter, MN and joined the Cadet Nurse Corps in 1945. She graduated from Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing, St. Paul MN in 1948.
Congress voted the Cadet Nurse Corps into service to fill in the large shortage of nurses on the home front because so many were serving overseas. The commitment was to serve in nursing for the duration of WWII.

She married Robert McIntyre Douglass in Anoka, MN at Zion Lutheran Church on June 17, 1949. Ensign Douglass of Anoka and same High School class was a recent graduate of the United States Naval Academy and had a career in the Submarine service so they lived in many different locations, the favorite being Honolulu, HI. They loved travel to all 50 states and 14 foreign countries and sailed the entire East Coast of the United States. Marilyn was a volunteer most of her life, locally for Child and Family Agency, L&M Auxiliary and for 30 years, she was a patient care and bereavement volunteer with Hospice of Southeastern CT, a job which meant a great deal to her!
Marilyn belonged to Elmridge Nine Hole Woman’s Golf, Bookmarks Book Club, and Noank Baptist Church. She loved music, plays and sporting events and especially family gatherings.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons: Jeff Douglass and daughter-in-law Swarn Khalsa, and John Douglass and wife Lory, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, 9 nieces and nephews, many special friends and sister-in-law Margy Faherty of Oak Grove, MN. She is predeceased by her sister Dorothy Smith Adams.

A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 23, at 2:00pm at Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Noank.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice Care or to the Noank Baptist Church.
