Obituary

WINDHAM - Alex John Bernier, age 34, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was born in Burlington, Vermont, on February 14, 1987, a son of Robert and Darla (Vandevord) Bernier.

After graduating from South Burlington High School, Alex proudly served in the United States Coast Guard for 15 years. He was the recipient of many commendations and awards and exemplified selflessness, bravery, and heroism throughout his life. In addition to the U.S. Coast Guard, he was also a proud member of the Southwest Harbor Fire Department, where he dedicated many hours to serving his community. When he left Southwest Harbor, a fellow firefighter and good friend said that Alex represented the saying, "leave it better than you found it." This kindness was the way Alex lived his life.

Alex will be lovingly remembered as a family man. He loved grilling and cooking and spent quite a bit of time at the family camp in Bakersfield, Vermont. He was immensely creative and loved building things; much of the beautiful furniture in his and Jessica's home was custom-made by the two of them. You could always find him working on something around the house or the yard. Alex thrived off of taking care of people and was incredibly proud of the life he created with Jessica and his three beautiful girls.

Alex is predeceased by his maternal grandfather - George Vandevord, paternal grandparents - Raymond and Cecile (Robidoux) Bernier.

He is survived by his beloved wife - Jessica (Trafton) Bernier, his daughters - Alexis, Emma, and Kaylee Bernier, maternal grandmother - Caroline (Flanders) Vandevord, parents - Robert and Darla (Vandevord) Bernier, and sisters - Katherine and Elizabeth Bernier, faithful dog Dakota, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews, as well as Jessica’s loving family.

On Saturday, October 16, 2021, a memorial gathering will be held from 2:00-4:00 PM at Chad E. Poitras Cremation and Funeral Service Chapel at 498 Long Plains Road, Buxton, Maine. The presentation of the flag to the family by the United States Coast Guard will be at 2:30 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to U.S. Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (www.cgmahq.org/), Southwest Harbor, Maine Fire Department, (www.swhfire.org/) or a charity of your choice in his memory.
