Obituary

ROBERTSVILLE, Mo. — Hugh B. "Buck" Darden Jr., age 88 years, of Robertsville, Missouri and formerly of Fairhaven, died March 31, 2006, at the home of his daughter in Missouri after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Geneveive (Marston) Darden.
Born in Hogansville, Georgia, he was the son of the late Hugh B. Darden Sr. and the late Annie (Johnson) Darden and was a graduate of Auburn University in Alabama Class of 1938. During World War II he served in the United States Army with the field artillery division and as Captain awarded two bronze stars for combat in Germany
Employed for 32 years by the Rubber Division of Acushnet Company, he retired as Comptroller in 1982. An active member of the Unitarian-Universalist Society of Fairhaven, he served as the President of the Board of Governors of his church, was a long-time member of the investment committee and with his late wife served for many years on the caregivers committee visiting church members.
Buck was President for 16 years of the Board of Directors of River-Side Cemetery, served 25 years on the Board of Directors of Community Nurse's Association of Fairhaven, was a member of the Men's Luncheon Club of New Bedford and Descendants of Whaling Masters.
He has also been active with the Fairhaven Historical Society and the Fairhaven Improvement Association and the Old Dartmouth Historical Association (Whaling Museum).
Buck is survived by his daughter, Ann D. Denicke and her husband, Rick, of Robertsville, Missouri; a granddaughter, Lindsey Collyer and a grandson, Dana Collyer, both of Fairhaven; and nieces and nephews.
His memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Unitarian Memorial Church, Fairhaven with reception to follow in the church parlors. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to the Educational-Scholarship Fund of his church at 102 Green Street, Fairhaven MA 20719. Burial is private.
