Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Mary T. (Fenton) Phelan, 96, of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, September 24, 2021. She passed into Eternal Life at the Sixteen Acres Healthcare Center in Springfield surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Springfield on February 9, 1925, a beloved daughter of the late Andrew and Bridget (Hoar) Fenton. She was raised on Groveland Street in the Forest Park section of Springfield, attended Kensington Avenue Elementary School and graduated from the Forest Park Middle School. She later graduated in 1942 from Cathedral High School in Springfield. During her early years, Mary was employed as a Time Keeper at the former Buxton Corporation in Springfield and later worked at the East Springfield Plant of the former Westinghouse Corporation. As her family grew, Mary became a stay at home mom to nurture her six boys. Mary later made her home for many years on Phoenix Terrace in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and later lived for many years at Linden Towers on Stafford Street in Springfield. As her health declined, Mary became a resident of Wingate at Springfield, which later was renamed Sixteen Acres Healthcare Center, in Springfield. Mary was a resident there for many years and became the ambassador for the facility. She knew all the staff by name and many of the residents who she visited daily. She was a loving, gentle soul who received exceptional care from all the staff at Sixteen Acres since 2008 during her long Journey Home. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Thomas J. Phelan who was Called Home on May 4, 1985. They were married at Holy Name Church in Springfield on June 26, 1948 and were blessed with over 36 years of marriage together. Besides her husband, Mary was predeceased by four loving sons, Thomas J. Phelan, Joseph Mark Phelan, James M. Phelan and Andrew P. Phelan. She leaves her two devoted sons, Kevin A. Phelan and Michael D. Phelan and his wife, Carolyn, all of Springfield; her loving daughter-in-law, Joan E. (Doyle) Phelan of Springfield; her loving sister, Anne Connors of Springfield; several cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended family members. Besides her parents, husband and sons, Mary was predeceased by her loving brother, Maurice “Mossy” Fenton; and her two loving sisters, Helen Fleming and Barbara Fenton. A private graveside service will be held at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
