1918 was a most memorable and pivotal year. The United States had entered into the war to end all wars, the influenza epidemic would sweep the country and the Boston Red Sox would win the World Series, a feat they would not repeat for the next 86 years. On February 23. 1918 a baby girl was born in a small town in the province of Quebec. Simone Remillard came into the world 103 years ago. She would live to witness most of the twentieth and the first two decades of the twenty-first centuries. In her lifetime she lived through two world wars, radio, television and computers and a man walking on the moon, just to name of few of the events and wonders she saw. Simone Remillard spent the best of her 103 years as a loving and devoted wife and mother. She loved all around her. She taught the three generations of the grandchildren she lived to see about the love only a mother can give. Simone’s legacy is 103 years of faith, love and devotion.
Simone Remillard, 103, of Woonsocket died peacefully at home on Monday September 6, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Armand G. Remillard. They were married on May 30, 1941 and shared over 37 years together until his passing in September 1978.
Born in St. Bernard P.Q. Canada, she was a daughter of the late Napoleon and Josephine (Blanchette) Lamoureux. Simone moved with her family to Woonsocket in 1920 and lived the rest of her life in the Northern Rhode Island area.
Simone was employed in the local textile industry at several area mills. She worked for AT Cross in Lincoln for many years before retiring.
Simone was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart parish where she served as a Eucharistic minister and volunteered for many activities at the church.
Simone led a very active life that extended well into her retirement years. She volunteered at St. Antoine Residence visiting patients and spreading goodwill and cheer. She logged thousands of miles and hours as a volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels. Simone ran up and down the stairs of many a three decker to deliver meals but more importantly friendship and kindness with her smile and cheerful demeanor.
Simone was an active member of the Holy Family, Sacred Heart and St. Agatha’s senior citizens groups, the RSVP club and its choir and at the Woonsocket Senior Center.
Simone did not know the meaning of the term “down time”, but on the occasions when she was not “on the go” she was very talented at sewing and crocheting, especially creating Afghans. Crossword puzzles, being immersed in a good book and just sitting in the warm sunshine were her relaxation.
Simone is survived by her daughter Jeannette M. Cousineau of Woonsocket. She was the mother of the late Raymond Remillard who passed away in 2007. She was the sister of the late Leopold, Aime, Lucien, Raoul and Paul Lamoureux, Donalda Durand, Rose Lacroix, Florida Heroux. Antoinette Lusiser, Yvonne William, Sr. Berthe Lamoureux, PM and Rolande Pouliot. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, 7 great- great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and their families.
Relatives and friends are invited honor and remember Simone’s life at visiting hours on Friday from 3-7 pm at Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket.
Her funeral will be Saturday at 8:30 from the Menard-Lacouture Funeral Home, 127 Carrington Ave. Woonsocket followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Holy Trinity Parish (OLQM Church) on Park Ave. in Woonsocket. Simone will be laid to rest alongside her husband Armand in St. Jean Baptiste Cemetery, Bellingham.
