William R. Witkum

DRACUT - William R. Witkum, age 70, the retired owner of a Wilmington company and a
conservation activist in Dracut, died Saturday, April 8, at the Kindred Hospital in Peabody, from
complications following a stoke he suffered on December 28th.
He was born in Lowell, July 5, 1935, the son of William A. and Anne E. (Shimkus) Witkum. He
was raised in Tewksbury and graduated from Tewksbury Memorial High School. He had lived in
Dracut for the past four decades.
In his early career, he worked as a draftsman for the Louis Sack Company in Somerville. He later
founded the Myron Engineering company in Wilmington, a stainless steel and metal fabrication
company, which he owned until his retirement. His son now operates the family business.
He was an active member of the Dracut Conservation Commission, where he served the town of
Dracut for 28 years, before retiring last year.
He was described by his family as a computer hobbyist, motorcyclist, amateur astronomer, and
home craftsman.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William R. Witkum Jr. and his wife Un Chu of
Kingston, NH; a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis A. Donaldson and her husband William of
Londonderry, NH; a sister, Patricia A. Witkum of Tewksbury; four grandchildren, William Y.
Witkum, Renèe, Cara and Matthew Donaldson all of N.H.; and many cousins and dear friends.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated Wednesday, April 12, in St. William’s Church,
Tewksbury. Burial was in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials to the Kindred Hospital
North, 15 King St., Peabody, MA 01960, will be appreciated.
