Obituary

“BostonRetired Boston Police Department Sergeant, Michael "Mike" Charbonnier , a lifelong resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Monday, August 30, 2021 at his home in Marshfield following a courageous 4 year battle with cancer. He was 58 years of age.

Mike was born in Boston on October 1, 1962, a son of the late Augustus P. "Gus" Charbonnier and Helen R. (Yarasitis) Charbonnier. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated at the Bunker Hill School, St. Francis De Sales Parochial School and graduated from Christopher Columbus High School in 1980. He furthered his education and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Curry College and his Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Suffolk University. Mike joined the Boston Police Department on November 27, 1989 and served the City of Boston in the East Boston neighborhood at District A-7 for many years and also served in the downtown and Charlestown area of Boston at District A-1. He was promoted to Sergeant on August 29, 2012 and held that position until his retirement on January 19, 2021 following 32 years of dedicated service to the City of Boston. He was a member of the Boston Police Department Superior Officers Union. Mike received many accommodations and citations during his career with the Boston Police Department and in 1998 he received the National Top Cop Award presented to him in Washington, D.C.

Mike was active in community affairs and was a member of Charlestown Against Drugs, Board Member for Charlestown Lacrosse, Board of Trustee Member for Bunker Hill Community College, Board Member for Massachusetts Association of Mental Health, Board Member of The Gavin House, member of Bunker Hill Associates, Charlestown Pop Warner and The Charlestown Neighborhood Council.

In his spare time, Mike enjoyed traveling, cooking, entertaining at the house in Rexhame and most of all, he enjoyed being around his family and appreciating all the quality moments he shared with his 2 children and how proud he was of their accomplishments and the many moments he shared with his sisters and brothers and their families.

Mike is the devoted father of Noel R. Charbonnier, Isabelle M. Charbonnier along with their mother Susan (Kilcoyne) Charbonnier. He is the beloved companion of Grace Bloodwell. He is the beloved brother of Patricia Gundy and her husband William, retired Massachusetts State Police Trooper Thomas Charbonnier and his wife Leslie, Linda Kerrigan and her husband James, James Charbonnier and his wife Kathy, Maryann Ranahan and her husband retired Boston Firefighter Kevin, Joseph Charbonnier and his wife Kathy, John "Beansie" Charbonnier and his wife Marilyn, Joan Carney and the late Judy Lucas and her husband Jack and Richard "Red" Charbonnier. He is also survived by his many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives & friends are invited to attend Mike's Funeral on Saturday September 4, 2021 at 9:30 AM. from The Carr Funeral Home 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 11 AM. His burial will be private. His visiting hours will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021 from 3 to 8 PM. in the funeral home.
