Obituary

Betty Newman of Provincetown died at home Friday, August 6, 2021.

She was born in Coney Island, New York. After high school she moved to New York City and eventually worked for the ASPCA. Her brownstone in Brooklyn was filled with dogs, cats and birds she met while working there.

After moving to Provincetown, she and Phyllis Schlosburg bought the Post Office Cafe and later, The Pilgrim House Hotel, where they introduced many talented performers to Provincetown summer crowds. In 2001 Betty bought Pied Piper Real Estate with Phoebe Otis. Betty's talent for matching renters with weekly rental units soon became well known among gay men, many of whom would only deal with her.

She retired in 2014, and in 2016 she married her long-time partner, Phoebe Otis. Betty leaves her wife, Phoebe of Provincetown and niece, Annette Kramer of Long Island, N.Y.

In lieu of flowers, Betty requested donations be made to Helping Our Women, 34 Conwell St, Provincetown, MA 02657.
