Obituary

Laura G. Poulton, 90, of Dartmouth, passed away Saturday, July 31, 2021.

Daughter of the late John F. and Alice (Tetrault) Gannon of New Bedford, she was born in 1930 and was influenced by the Great Depression, '38 Hurricane, and World War II. She married the late John Poulton, Jr. of New Bedford in 1950.

She is survived by her sisters, Dorothy Marshall of Delaware and Florence Curry of New Bedford; her children, John F. Poulton and wife Kimberly of Westport and Joyce Sheridan and husband David of Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Janet Brum and husband Alfred, and Brian Sheridan and fiancé Emily Mellgard of Dartmouth, Rachel Poulton of Westport, and Jamie Poulton of Virginia; and one great-grandchild, Ashley Brum.

Laura worked for many years as a bookkeeper in the fishing industry and after her retirement she volunteered for many years with WHALE. An avid bridge player, she enjoyed competing at duplicate bridge and achieved Life Master status. A gracious hostess, Laura kept the family grounded in the importance of family with weekly Sunday dinners, where all were welcome.

Her Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at 11 AM at St. John the Baptist Church in Westport. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 8:30-10:15 AM, prior to the Mass, in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations to either St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or The Salvation Army, 619 Purchase St., New Bedford, MA 02740 would be greatly appreciated.
