William E. Deakin, 81, of Rochester died April 4, 2006 at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth after a brief illness.
He was the husband of the late Mary Louise (Raleigh) Deakin.
Born in New Bedford, the son of the late William and Nellie (Adams) Deakin, he lived in Rochester most of his life.
Mr. Deakin was a member of the Long Plain Methodist Church and was a former member and deacon at the North Rochester Congregational Church.
He was formerly employed by Bridgewater State Prison as a Correction Officer for many years until his retirement as Corrections Supervisor.
Mr. Deakin served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the submarines, SS-475, U.S.S. Argonaut and SS-121, U.S.S. S-16 and the submarine tender U.S.S. Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16). He was the recipient of the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic - Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Submarine Insignia, and the World War II Victory Medal.
He was a member of the Rochester Historical Society and volunteered at SHARE and the Rochester Council on Aging.
Survivors include a son, Bruce Everett Deakin of Rochester; a daughter, Jill Erin Gordon, and her husband Steven, of Acushnet; 2 brothers, Norman Deakin and Howard Deakin, both of Florida; 4 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Elsie Fox and Warren Deakin.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Service in the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt.6), Mattapoisett, Saturday, April 8th at 1 PM.
Visiting hours Friday, April 7th from 4-7 PM and Saturday, April 8th from 11 AM to 1 PM prior to his service.
