July 27, 2021

Obituary

Spencer Lee Shank, (Spank to those who loved him), 72, Anderson, left this life for Heaven from Community Hospital ICU in the early hours of July 27, 2021 after a lengthy illness.
Born to Rolland Jay and Wandalee (Forrester) Shank in Anderson, he was a 47 year employee of Roby’s Plumbing and Appliances.
Spencer is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cheryl (Utt) Shank whom he married on July 26, 1969; two children, Sonya Cook (David) of LaGrange, KY and Craig Shank of Carlisle, In, three grandchildren; Isaiah, Aaron, and Adrah Cook, his brother, Thomas Jay Shank (Marsha), his sister Mary Jane Fairchild (John) and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Spencer’s many joys included gardening, oil painting, watching Colts football, Reds baseball, and IU, Purdue, and Butler basketball. Having graduated from Highland High School in 1967 he did so having lettered in baseball and football himself. He still has a great many friends and former teammates from those “glory days.” He cherished those friendships and remained in contact.
He was very active at North Anderson/ Madison Park Church of God, having worked with his wife in youth ministry, playing catcher for the softball team, and serving in various leadership roles. The one of which he was most proud was chair of the trustees as the N Scatterfield Road facility was being built.
Other special times were seen in travels with Cheryl through the Tri-S program at Anderson University and loving the many students that passed through the Shank home as they attended AU. Spencer leaves many lifelong friends who have been a constant in his life.
Visitation will take place at Rozelle-Johnson Funeral Service, 229 S Rangeline Rd, Anderson from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 30th and funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 31 at Madison Park Church of God, 6607 Providence Drive, Anderson. Visitation will precede the service at 9:00 a.m. Lifelong friend Reverend Dr. Steve Birch will officiate.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Anderson University and Madison Park Church of God.
A very special thank you is sent to the Community Hospital Anderson ICU medical team that were so kind and competent in giving care to Spencer and his family, and to the many dear friends, too numerous to name individually, who have loved Spencer so well.
