Obituary

John E. “Jake” Trainor, age 85, lived his life full of energy, purpose, love, and unending faith. He spent countless years being a resource to others in their faith serving as a lector, partaking in prayer groups, and helping others find God in their lives.

John was born on December 6, 1935, in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He was the son of Cyril Joseph and Margaret Helen (Hayes) Trainor. He graduated from Scollard Hall Catholic Boys High School in Ontario, Canada. After graduating, John took on missionary work spreading the Catholic faith in Japan for 7 years before moving to the United States where he earned his master’s degree in Social Work from Boston College and started his family.

John was a man selflessly devoted to others which was apparent to all he came in contact with during his long and distinguished career as a social worker for the Department of Children and Families (formerly the Department of Social Services/DSS).

At the time of his peaceful death surrounded by family, John was living in Medford with his wife Susan (Hanley) Trainor. He is predeceased by his first wife, Lillian (Joyce) Trainor with whom he lived in Lunenburg for over forty years. He was the devoted father of Matthew Trainor and his wife Jamie of Lunenburg, Chris Trainor and his wife Kate of Sudbury, and Meghan Hall and her husband Arthur of De Pere, WI. He was a doting and mischievous grandfather (“Bumpa”) to Kaleigh, Kiera, Emma, Katelin and Kennedy Trainor, and Cyril and Zola Hall. John was the dear brother of Barbara Kaye and her husband George of Charlotte, NC and Thomas Trainor and his wife Margaret of Guelph, Canada. He is predeceased by his sister Margaret Sinclair of Ontario, Canada. He is also survived by his wife’s children: Carlene Hagarty and her husband Joseph of Dedham, Allison McCabe and her husband Dan of Salem, NH, Lauren Ryder and her husband Tony of Kittery Point, ME, and his wife’s dear grandchildren: Aaron, Emilee, Madeleine, Lucy, Jacob, and Jackson.

John spent many years devoting his time to the safety and security of children in the Central MA region. As such, in lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorial donations be made in John Trainor’s honor to:
