Obituary

Mary E. (Cheetham) Kane, 96, of Tewksbury, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on July 23, 2021. She was the widow of the late James P. Kane who passed away in 1995.

Mary was born in Lowell, the eldest daughter of the late George and Helen (Sullivan) Cheetham. She was raised in Lowell and was a graduate of St. Michael’s School and Lowell High School. She furthered her education at the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Services while working at Barry’s Pharmacy in Lowell. Once she achieved her pharmacy degree, she began working as a pharmacist at St. John's Hospital and later at Solomon Mental Health Care, both in Lowell. She also worked as a substitute librarian for the Tewksbury public schools

Mary then moved to Tewksbury, marrying James in 1956 and started their family. She also became an active communicant of St. William’s Church which she remained her entire life. She attended mass daily, was a Eucharistic Minister, a member of the Ladies Sodality and was an adorer at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel since its inception. Mary also continued to maintain a membership of the Legion of Mary at St. Michael’s church in Lowell.

Mary was an avid Red Sox and Bruins fan, she never missed a game. She loved stopping at a good yard sale and always enjoyed browsing at used book stores. She also enjoyed going out to eat with her family and friends especially her Saturday morning coffee gatherings. She was an avid reader, in particular historical books and mystery books. At the age of 85 she fulfilled her lifelong ambition of going on a hot air balloon ride. She also had an appreciation for the outdoors and gardening. Watching the birds at the feeder always made her smile as well as watching almost any nature show on TV.

Mary is survived by her children, Patrick Kane of Tewksbury, Maryanne Kane of Nashua, NH, Eileen Beaton and Thomas Spear of Londonderry, NH, Lawrence Kane of Tewksbury, Michael Kane and his wife, Michelle of Nashua, NH, Martin Kane of Dracut, Maureen Ward and her husband, John of Worcester. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alison Beaton of Nashua, NH, Lori Lamy of Pepperell, Kerrie Beaton of Madison Wisconsin, Jillian Beaton of Highlands Ranch Colorado, Eric Ward of Worcester, Adam Ward of Worcester, Devon Tucker of Hudson, NH, Nathan Tucker of Nashua, NH and her five great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In additon to her husband, James, she was also predeceased by her sisters, Virginia Cheetham and Helen Saba. She was also predeceased by 7 brothers in law and 4 sisters in law, most recently, Mary A. Kane.

On Tuesday, July 27, 2021, all are welcome to attend her calling hours from 4-7 p.m. at Tewksbury Funeral Home, 1 Dewey Street, Tewksbury, 978-851-2061. Her funeral will begin on Wednesday, July 28, 2021 at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by her funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Williams Church, 1351 Main Street, Tewksbury, continuing with burial at Tewksbury Cemetery.
