Obituary

Francisco Da Cunha Da Silva, 65, of Lowell, passed away after a long period of declining health on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Tufts New England Medical Center. He was the husband of Maria A. (Bettencourt) Da Silva, with whom he would have celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary this August.

Francisco was born on January 24, 1956 in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal and was raised and educated in that area. He also served 2 years in the Portuguese military. A son of the late Mateus DaCunha and the late Capitolina (DaSilva) DaCunha, he came to the United States in 1994, settling in Lowell’s Back Central Neighborhood.

Mr. Da Silva was a communicant of St. Anthony Church and was a former member of the Portuguese American Center “The Blues Club”. He was an avid soccer fan and an ardent supporter of S.L. Benfica. He also enjoyed fishing and tending to his vineyards and gardens. Time spent with his family meant the world to him, especially his beloved grandchildren. He worked at Old Mother Hubbard for 12 years and later with Majilite for a period of 10 years as a quality control manager before the pandemic forced his early retirement in 2020.

Besides his devoted wife Maria A. (Bettencourt) Da Silva, he is survived by his 3 children, Carlos DaSilva and his wife, Marilia, of Lowell, Ana Gonzalez and Adriana Veiga and her husband, Tercio, of Lowell. He also leaves behind his 4 grandchildren, Ethan Gonzalez, Anabella Gonzalez, Julian Gonzalez and Gonsalo Viega, his siblings, Valter Bettencourt of Pico, Azores, Portugal, Rosa Machado of California, Zelia Chavez of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal and Jose Silva of Nashua, NH, his brothers and sisters in law, Eutimio Lima of Lawrence, Asciolindo Bettencourt of Lowell, Maria Joao Pereira of Lawrence and many nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late Clarinda Da Silva.

On Thursday July 22, 2021 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 9 until 11 a.m. at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, 978-458-6816. His funeral mass will follow at 12 p.m. at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell, and burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery.
