Obituary

John F. Derry, 76, of Franklin, passed away peacefully after a brief illness on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband to Margaret J. (Moran) Derry.

Born November 21, 1944 in Worcester, he was a son of the late Peter and Patience (Hicks) Derry. He was raised and educated in Worcester, and graduated from South High School. John spent his childhood at the ballfield. He played in the Ted Williams Little League and was known as “Dinger Derry” for all the homeruns he hit. He took his knowledge and love for sports to coach with his best friend, Butch, in Worcester and later in life also co-founded the girls softball league in Franklin for his girls to play in.

After graduating high school he immediately started learning all the aspects of hardwood flooring. He then owned and operated his own business, Derry’s Hardwood Floors, for over 40 years. He took pride in his top quality workmanship.

He enjoyed many golf trips to Myrtle Beach, SC., and cherished the time he spent with family and friends. John loved the time spent with his grandkids, riding bikes, fishing and playing wiffle ball.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three daughters, Joyce Derry of Millville, Joanne Derry of Milford, and Jennifer Derry of Whitinsville; five grandchildren, Caitlyn Anderson, Alicia Larsen, Sadie Trites, Finnian Trites, and Declan Trites; his brothers, Peter Derry of Worcester and James Derry of Shrewsbury; and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many dear friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, brother, Thomas Derry and his sister, Mildred Derry and best friend, Walter Clark Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his calling hours on Sunday, July 18, from 2 to 5 PM in the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home, 33 Cottage St. Franklin.

His funeral service will be held Monday, July 19, in the funeral home privately with his family. Burial at Rural Cemetery, Worcester, will take place at a later date with his family.

In lieu of flowers, the Derry family requests donations to be made to a charity of one’s choice.
